Charles Booth's East London survey, 1889

results of Booth's survey.

Charles Booth did his survey in 1889 in Eastern London. 51people  were able-bodied altogether 634 people  took part in the survey. 36 people who took part were poor due to an accident. 28% of people taking part were poor due to being sick and unable to work. Old age was the main reason for poverty . The second biggest was sickness with 28% and the third biggest, drink with 13%. .To reduce poverty the best way would be to introduce old age pensions, raise taxes on drink so it becomes more expensive and finally set up sick pay (national insurance)
